- gun violence Prevention
Shaundelle Brooks has relentlessly sought evidence-based solutions to reduce gun violence. She will fight for red flag laws, waiting periods, enhanced background checks, and a ban on assault weapons. By treating gun violence as a public health issue, we can reduce gun deaths while respecting Second Amendment rights. Her approach includes community outreach programs to educate about gun safety and partnerships with local law enforcement to ensure effective enforcement of gun laws.
- Public Education
As a mother of four, Shaundelle knows the public school system well. She opposes private school vouchers that drain resources from public schools and advocates for equity in public schools so every student can succeed. She supports higher pay for teachers and staff, recognizing that competitive salaries are essential to attract and retain quality educators. Shaundelle also champions the expansion of youth development programs like sports, arts, and STEM initiatives that keep kids engaged and out of trouble, fostering a well-rounded education that prepares them for future success.
- Affordable Housing
Housing affordability is a significant concern in District 60. Shaundelle is committed to supporting policies that provide assistance for first-time homebuyers and improve the availability of affordable housing options. This includes advocating for zoning reforms to encourage the development of mixed-income housing and supporting programs that offer rental assistance to low-income families. She also emphasizes the importance of protecting tenants’ rights and ensuring safe living conditions for all residents.
- Healthcare Access
Expanding access to healthcare, especially mental health services and maternal healthcare, is crucial. Shaundelle advocates for improved rural healthcare, mental health support in schools, and access to contraceptives. She supports the expansion of Medicaid and the establishment of community health clinics to provide comprehensive care to underserved populations. Shaundelle is also committed to addressing the opioid crisis through prevention, treatment, and recovery programs that are accessible to all residents.
- Reproductive Rights
Shaundelle believes women need full bodily autonomy. She will fight to repeal Tennessee’s extreme abortion ban and increase access to contraceptives and maternal healthcare, ensuring women don’t have to leave the state for critical medical care. She supports comprehensive sex education programs that inform young people about reproductive health and prevent unintended pregnancies. Shaundelle also advocates for policies that provide support to new mothers, including paid family leave and affordable childcare options.
- Government Transparency and Accountability
Shaundelle is committed to making government transparent, accessible, and accountable. She will prioritize lifting up every voice in the district by holding regular town hall meetings and responding promptly to constituent concerns. Shaundelle advocates for campaign finance reforms that reduce the influence of money in politics and ensure that elected officials are accountable to their constituents, not special interests. She also supports measures to improve voter access and participation, including expanding early voting and making Election Day a holiday.
- Support for Men's Mental Health
Recognizing the significant impact of mental health issues among men in District 60, Shaundelle will advocate for increased access to mental health services and work to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. This includes promoting mental health education and awareness campaigns, as well as expanding access to counseling and support services in schools, workplaces, and communities. Shaundelle also supports policies that address the root causes of mental health issues, such as unemployment and substance abuse.
- LGBTQ+ Rights
Shaundelle stands for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. She will advocate for non-discrimination laws and policies that protect LGBTQ+ individuals in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Shaundelle supports the inclusion of LGBTQ+ issues in school curricula and anti-bullying policies that protect LGBTQ+ students. She also advocates for healthcare policies that ensure LGBTQ+ individuals have access to the care they need and mental health services.
